The Beginning

Teaser - Phoenix, Arizona

A man, Sandy, and another man get into a van. Sandy is shivering when he gets dropped off at his house. He goes in looking quite ill. Sandy collapses onto his sofa and stares in horror at his hand, which is gel-like, like the victims in FTF.

7:04 next morning

The other man from the truck enters and calls out his name. He goes to the couch and looks shocked. Although he doesn’t know it, we know that an alien has "been born." Suddenly there is blood everywhere because the alien attacks the man. He tries to get away but is killed.

Mulder pieces together burnt X-files on a screen, restoring them. Next, we see him speaking to the review committee. {Have you ever seen ‘Just Shoot Me’? It is a sitcom over here. Anyway, there is a character on it called Nina. That actress plays a committee member whose name I don’t know.}

This is a very comical scene. The committee keeps calling the aliens ‘spacelings.’ Mulder says Scully has scientific proof about the virus but she says nothing and looks embarrassed.

Afterward, in the hall, Mulder and Scully argue. They take their usual roles. Scully says that she can’t identify the virus but that it originated on Earth. What a surprise.

In New York City, New York

CSM tells Strughold that there has been ‘sloppiness’ and two men are dead. Strughold replies that the alien must be ‘disposed of.’ CSM says he will see to it that it is done.

Back in Washington

Mulder is still restoring X-files when Skinner comes in and informs him that the committee voted for Mulder and Scully not to be reassigned to the X-files. Mulder is very angry. Skinner tells him that if he goes to his old office, there is a file that will help him very much. Mulder goes down to his office and sees a picture of the dead Sandy.

Spencer comes in. He has evidently been assigned to the X-files in Mulder’s place. They argue and Diana Fowley comes in. She has also been assigned to the X-files, which makes Mulder doubly angry since he feels she has betrayed him.

We see a ‘no smoking’ sign, but CSM lights up anyway. He strolls through a large room filled with doctors. CSM says the ‘patient’ must be moved and the doctors say it is too dangerous. CSM insists and we see that it is Gibson Praise, the psychic little boy from ‘The End.’

Phoenix - 4:58 p.m.

Scully and Mulder are investigating Sandy’s home, though illegally. They find deep scratches in the wall, which the official report says, were made with someone’s bare hands. The two find a large fingernail on the floor. Mulder’s theory, correct but unbelievable, is that the alien gestated and later killed the second man. Scully is doubtful.

We see CSM and Gibson riding in a car. Gibson says that ‘it’ was there but has gone. They argue a but and CSM says that he must find ‘it.’

TXF

Mulder and Scully are now outside of Sandy’s residence, deep into one of their typical science vs. paranormal arguments. Well, there’s a new one.

Rolling Hills Nuclear Power Plant

A lone worker walks down to the control room and tells the second to wake up. They joke around and the second worker, Homer, does a systems check. He finds a problem and goes to check it out. (There was his first mistake.)

We see a long shot of the employee, as if we are the alien. Homer hears a noise and turns to investigate. (Strike two.) Next, Homer sticks his wrench behind some bars in an attempt to figure out what is there. (Strike three, he’s dead!) The alien attacks and Homer dies.

12:14 the next day

Mulder, Scully, and a large group of people are gathered outside the plant. The two agents try to enter, but Spender stops them. Diana comes over, but also keeps them from entering. They argue, and Scully and Mulder leave. Back in the car, they find that Gibson is in the backseat, his head in bandages. Scully tries to revive him but he doesn’t stir.

Camelback View Motel

Scully removes the bandages from Gibson’s head as Mulder comes in. They discover that Gibson was operated on because of his ability to read minds and the fact that he could help the men find the alien. Gibson snuck into Mulder and Scully’s car to get away. "What is ‘it’?" Scully asks.

Gibson replies, "You already know, you just don’t want to admit it."

Scully tells Mulder that Gibson needs to be taken to a hospital and after a little hesitation, he agrees. Scully and Mulder put Gibson in the car and another car drives up. Diana Fowley gets out of it and she says she’s there to help him. They argue a little, but he ends up going with her to the nuclear power plant.

In the car on the way, Diana tells Mulder about the case and says that the body was gone before she got there. The two are worried that the alien might cause an outbreak of the virus.

The hospital

Gibson is taken in on a stretcher. He tells Scully he doesn’t want anymore tests, but she says he needs them. She looks like she is very sorry.

Rolling Hills Nuclear Power Plant

11:42 <What, not 11:21?>

Diana and Mulder run down a long hall, up some stairs, and to where the body was found. Mulder steps in a gooey substance. He follows it down a row of goo-covered pipes, to the wrench, and finally to where the alien was hiding before. Mulder reaches in and pulls out a dead skin, like the alien has shed it’s skin. His phone rings.

It’s Scully, who says that Gibson has the virus. As Scully is talking, a doctor ominously approaches Gibson.

Scully sees that Gibson is gone and becomes frantic. The doctor (a different one) tells her that he can’t be gone, but Gibson is in a van with the evil doctor, speeding away.

TXF

Diana and Mulder hide as Gibson and the doctor come into the nuclear plant, then follow them as the doctor pushes Gibson along the twisted passageways. They end up in an icy blue-lit room. It has a huge vat in the middle where the blue glow is coming from. It is filled with a blue liquid and lots of shiny, metal poles. The doctor tries to get Gibson to tell him where the alien is but he does not. Mulder and Diana burst into and adjoining room and Mulder bangs helplessly on the door as he watches the doctor being killed.

TXF

Later, the committee decrees that Mulder and Scully will be allowed no contact with the X-files. Mulder’s angry face fades to Spender’s angry face as he argues with CSM. The two discuss Mulder. <Note: Mulder’s ‘I Want to Believe’ poster is replaced by a framed photograph of Bill Clinton, the US president. Clinton was recently involved in a huge scandal.>

TXF

Mulder, defying orders, is still attempting to restore X-files. Scully enters and the two argue about Diana. Scully says that Diana betrayed Mulder in her report. "I don’t doubt what you saw Mulder. I don’t doubt you." BUT, and then the big but, she still believes in what science has proven. Scully gives Mulder an ultimatum: her or me.

Furthermore, the virus and DNA from the fingernail match - as does part of Gibson’s DNA - as does part of everyone’s DNA. It’s just that in most people, this DNA is inactive - in Gibson, it was turned on.

TXF

Gibson is still in the small blue-lit room, looking warily at the vat. We look inside, and deep beneath the surface in the alien, shedding it’s skin, preparing for another kill.
