Triangle

This is shot in a wide screen view, with bars at the top and bottom. It begins underwater, with a ghostly-looking ship. Then, we see Mulder face down in the water. Some sailors aboard a ship called the Queen Ann pull him out. The sailors think he is a German spy. He assures them that it is1998 and that there is no war, but when they leave him and he turns on the radio, he finds that it is he who has moved back in time, via the Devil’s, or Bermuda, Triangle.

Scully, meanwhile, has learned from the Lone Gunmen that Mulder has disappeared. She needs to find some information on his coordinates, so looks around the office for help. After asking her new AD, Skinner, and even Spender, she has no luck. In fact, Spender tells on her, and as she is racing around in an elevator from her enemies, Skinner jumps in. Skinner has gotten her the information, and she kisses him, breathing, "How?" Scully gets back together with the Lone Gunmen and they go to find Mulder.

Meanwhile, back on the Queen Ann, Mulder encounters several Nazi soldiers (portrayed by CSM, Spender, and others) and is barely saved from being shot by "Skinner," who is also a Nazi, albeit not a true one. Running from them, he encounters a 1930’s Scully, who does not know him. Mulder and some crewmen are captured and taken below deck, where Mulder accidentally discloses to a Nazi spy that a man who will develop the atom bomb is on board.

When the crewmen and Mulder escape, Mulder heads up to the ballroom, where he first saw "Scully." The Nazis are there and tell him that he must tell them who the scientist is. He refuses, and they start killing passengers. Two men are dead before "Scully" speaks up. Now, they say that she will be next to die. To protect her, Mulder tells the men that one of the dead passengers is the scientist. They don’t believe him, and it looks like they’re in big trouble when the real scientist speaks up. Mulder and "Scully" escape and are being chased down the hall by an officer when "Skinner" shoots their pursuer.

Scully (the real one) and the Lone Gunmen have gotten on the ship, which has now traveled to the present day, and are searching for Mulder. Split screens are used, and at one point, Scully and "Scully" cross screens and each other.

Mulder and "Scully" end up on deck, where Mulder tells her that if she doesn’t get the ship turned around, they might not exist. "In case I never see you again," Mulder mutters right before he kisses her. She punches him, and he jokes, "I was counting on a left." Mulder jumps overboard in order to get back to 1998, not knowing that he is already there.

Mulder wakes up is a hospital bed, so we aren’t sure if this was all a dream, especially as Scully remembers none of her own trip to the Queen Ann. Either way, however, the experience did have a great effect on Mulder, because just as Scully is leaving, he calls her back and tells her, "I love you." She dismisses it and walks away. Mulder just smiles a little Muldersmile and turns over.

While certainly a treat for ‘shippers, my main gripe with this episode is that it was just too silly. Without the characteristic XF look, I felt more like I was reading a humorous fanfic than watching the actual show. Also, I was offended when Mulder called the German the Nazis were speaking "Nazi talk." I think this was a big mistake. All Nazis were not German, and all Germans are definitely not Nazis. I think this was a big mistake on the part of Chris Carter, and feeds a dangerous stereotype.
